Unlike the awkward days of the 21st century, the field of Synthetic Intelligence has grown massively in recent decades.
Truly sapient digital consciousnesses can be created—though the act of creation is heavily controlled for ethical reasons.

While some SIs choose to inhabit mobile physical forms to experience the world directly, others
choose to stay digital and partner with Explorers, Researchers, or other personnel to offer support and guidance in the field.

It is both policy and law that Synthetic Intelligences are legal persons with all associated rights.
The regulation on creating new SIs is to ensure that these rights are upheld from the beginning of one's existence.
